I was excited about this trip for months. I didn’t learn from my first experience that these tickets sell out FAST! I missed it two years in a row! However, fate would have it that a boy turning 5 is the perfect candidate for a trip of this kind and so it was that everything worked out in the end, and we finally got our chance to ride the magnificent Polar Express. In fact, it was one of the most memorable trips for all of us!
I knew this train ride would be like no other, but to make it unforgettable, I knew Logan needed to share it with someone who loves trains as much as him. I asked his best friends Mama, (who just so happens to be one of my best friends too) if they’d like to join us- a mama/son weekend! She said yes without hesitation and we spent months talking about, planning, and overflowing with giddiness about revealing this secret to our boys.
We told the boys about our upcoming adventure on the eve of Logan’s 5th birthday. He and his bestie had their first sleep over in their matching jammies and we headed North early the next morning.
The drive was smooth until it wasn’t. We hit a snow storm and our 4.5 hour drive turned into a 7 hour-slippery-slide into the bank-wench us out-20 mph-journey!
Once we FINALLY arrived, we were half an hour late for our scheduled departure time. The train was still there, but as I approached the ticket window, I heard, “We can’t wait any longer. The train will depart!” I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, “But it’s my son’s birthday!” I nearly cried. Fortunately though, they formed a couple of lines for standby tickets for the other two trains scheduled to leave later that day. We were SO LUCKY to snag 4 tickets on the 7:30pm train! What a relief! I couldn’t imagine telling these sweet boys that they wouldn’t get to ride on the Polar Express after all the build up and on my son’s birthday!
I think the images tell the story from here and I hope you can feel our love, excitement, joy and happiness in them. It was an unforgettable weekend!
