My sweet boy has always been the obsessive type when it comes to his interests. There have been three true loves in his life; Thomas the Tank Engine, Star Wars and Ninjago. As his parents, my husband and I frequently question why we can’t have a normal conversation with our son about the trees, the weather, how toilets flush… anything other than his latest addiction which is presently Ninjago. It’s the way things have always been with him. It’s stressful sometimes. It’s exhausting a lot of the time. But it’s just the way he’s wired and I respect him.
But every so often, he “accidentally” diverts from his topic of interest and we get to talk about love, the past, our favourite foods and I savour it. I try to keep it going for as long as I can because it’s so rare and feels so wonderful to talk about anything other than Ninjago. As he grows older, I only hope these opportunities come more frequently to talk about the world and enjoy a variety of topics. But for now, I just hang on to the moment. When they come. No matter how frequent. It’s all I can do.
Today we had a moment.
