Actively participating with accountability in the positive growth of social, economic and political change.
During the last two years of watching the tension and growing divide in our country as the presidential campaign unfolded, I’m feeling as if my naïvety has fallen to the floor in a great heaping pile. It’s kind of uncomfortable.
After the election, I thought my country had just died. I’m not even exaggerating when I say I went through all the stages of mourning. I kind of felt like throwing in the towel and saying, “Ok, fuck it! You win! Our country is doomed to a collective mentality of hate and loathing.”
But, thankfully that feeling has passed. Because you know what, that way of thinking will only add to the problem we’re facing.
The thing is, we are all so much better than that.
There’s something we CAN do. In fact there are endless things we can do. We have so little time and there are many ways we can impact this world in a positive way.
Not sure how? Check out my ever-evolving list:
I CAN volunteer with my kids.
I CAN offer my time to a neighbor who needs help.
I CAN help extended family members who are struggling.
I CAN buy less and quit supporting consumerism.
I CAN shop locally.
I CAN pick up trash when I’m walking to work.
I CAN take shorter showers.
I CAN vote in every (including local) election.
I CAN stand up for someone.
I CAN form alliances with friends/family who don’t share my political views.
I CAN attend protests that support my views.
I’ll admit, these actually sound so easy. But, I promise they’re not! How easy is it for me to have my entire family make an Amazon wish list, throw those exact items in my cart and “BAM”, done. Shopping locally isn’t the easiest way. These “easy” tasks take work and effort. Admittedly, some of them are already making me cringe. (I mean, I freaking love long showers)
But, we have to get uncomfortable.
We have to wake up. Quit blubbering. Stop spreading hate and reading article after article, that outlines our rapid decline to Hell.
We must unite.
We must begin a ripple… of love, kindness…
For the #greatergood.
Join the community of #greatergood by photographing your steps toward positive change. Then, tag it #greatergood and inspire someone else to follow suit.
Accountability. That’s the first step.
Start in your own family. Then, increase your reach. Invite others to join.
This is synergy. This is community. This is The United States of America, damn it.
Let’s quit crying and DO something.
